How does an automatic gate opener work?
An automatic gate opener works much like a garage door opener works. A wireless radio signal is sent from a transmitter in your vehicle (which looks like a garage door opener transmitter) to an RF (radio frequency) receiver box which is mounted near the gate. The receiver is wired to a control box and activates a circuit which initiates movement in the actuator or gate opener arm. The arm physically swings the gate open. The gate opener system needs either AC power or solar power to keep the battery charged. (see Powering Options for more info). The gate can then be closed in a variety of ways such as pushing the transmitter button again, or the gate can be configured to close automatically after a pre-determined amount of time.
What transmitters will work with the gate opener?
The Zareba Automatic Gate Opener kit includes a single button transmitter that can be set with a code that matches the code in your receiver box. Additional transmitters from Zareba can also be used, allowing you to open and close other devices, such as a garage door, with the same transmitter. In-vehicle transmitter systems (such as HomeLink®) can also be programmed to work with the Zareba Automatic Gate Opener.
How difficult is the set up and installation?
Each installation is unique and will vary depending on how many accessories are installed, if you have to run low voltage wire a great distance from a power source, and what type of gate and fence posts are used. The installation requires common tools. If possible, having two people on hand for the installation will make things go smoother. Read the installation manual before starting to make sure you understand the entire process before you begin. A simple installation should take no longer than 3-4 hours.
How many times will it open and close per day?
This depends on how you charge the 12-volt battery that operates the system and how large the gate is. In general, an AC power source will open the largest and heaviest gate 200 cycles per day. Solar power will charge the battery at a slower rate and the number of cycles per day will vary depending on the number of solar panels used.
How fast does the gate opener open the gate?
The opening time depends on how heavy and long the gate is. Most gates will open to 90-degrees in approximately 20 seconds.
Can you leave your gate open for an extended period after going through it?
You can choose to have the gate close automatically (after a predetermined number of seconds) or you can choose to have the gate close only upon physically pushing the button on the transmitter, keypad, or push button (doorbell type button) a second time. Thus the gate would remain open until it receives another signal.
What kind of gates does the Zareba Automatic Gate Opener work on?
The gate opener is very versatile and works with a wide variety of swing gates, including vinyl, chain link, metal, or wood gates (solid wood gates are not recommended as wind resistance may be an issue).
What type of gate latch is used?
The gate is stopped at the fence post with the gate stop plate. There is no "latch", the opener arm holds the gate securely in place and it can not be pushed open by hand. For additional security you may puchase a Zareba Automatic Gate Lock (GL1) that will secure the gate in the closed position.
What do we need to do differently in cold, snowy weather?
Your Zareba Automatic Gate Opener is designed to work in cold weather. Be sure to clear snow away from in front of the gate before activating the opener. Also, gate hinges may not open as smoothly in cold weather. To offset this greater resistance, you may need to increase the stall force setting in your opener's control box in cold weather.
Does the system work with the Homelink? system in my car?
Yes. Many cars today are equipped with the Homelink® system. To utilize this system with your Zareba Automatic Gate Opener, follow the setup instructions that come with your vehicle.
Can I open my gate and garage door from the same transmitter?
